Prélude à la mémoire de Jean Langlais (2013) was written for Ann Labounsky, leading interpreter and biographer of the French composer Jean Langlais (1907–1991). Following a procedure that Langlais used often in his own music, the material is derived from Labounsky’s name: the opening A-F-F (ANN) motive, and then a melodic spelling of her full name (Ann Labounsky Steele), which is hinted at throughout the first parts and forms the principal melody in the final section.
