Ulmkreis (2018) is dedicated to Philip Hartmann. The work consists of three short pieces inspired by the city of Ulm, Germany. In “Donau” (River Danube), two voices gently float. “Schiefes Haus” (Crooked House) is a scherzo, taking its name from one of Ulm’s tourist sights (a 16th century house in the Fischerviertel with crooked floors). The concluding “Münster” is named for Ulm Cathedral, which possesses the world’s highest church steeple and is the dominant building in the city square.
