The Galapagos Tortoise (2000/25) was originally part of a suite in which each movement was inspired by a different endangered animal species from around the world. The suite was withdrawn many years ago for its impractical instrumental combinations, but this movement inspired by the great Galapagos tortoise was arranged for piano solo for a performance by the Juventas New Music Ensemble at a fundraiser for the Charles Darwin Foundation.
Like the tortoise itself, the music is slow-moving (and often deep in sonority). A somewhat elegiac tone pervades the music, but the last chord is one of hope.
