Near (Cantus IV) (2016) for piano was commissioned by Mary Bainbridge for the Noonday Concert Series. It is very quiet music—simple and tender; changes happen with a degree of subtlety. Near is dedicated to David Lang on his 60th birthday.

(The subtitle places the work as the fourth in an series of pieces with related character begun in 2011. If more than one of the cantus pieces are programmed together, they should not appear immediately next to each other on a program.)
