Marston Street (2025)

Hymn Tune (76 76 D)

“Unsettled and Uncertain”; Carl P. Daw, Jr.

Dedication: for the Society of St. John the Evangelist, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Contact the composer regarding perusal or performance materials.

Unsettled and uncertain,
disoriented, lost,
bereft of chart or compass,
unmoored and tempest-tossed:
our daily life confounds us;
old certainties are gone.
No confidence consoles us
or trust in anyone.

Yet to this common chaos
there comes a whispered word;
it comes from far behind us
and far ahead is heard.
“Peace be with you,” says Jesus,
and as we hear him speak,
we sense how he has called us
to live the peace we seek.

In faith we here have gathered
to claim imperfectly
our call to be Christ’s Body
for all the world to see:
a reconciling people,
attempting day by day
to live the holy promise
of what we sing and pray.
