Lullaby and Pastorale (2011) for flugelhorn and drone is dedicated to Ella Rose Fennell on her birthday, August 11, 2011 and for her parents Drew and Krista Fennell. The two outer sections unfold a gentle lullaby. The middle section is a Medieval-style pastorale in the Lydian mode.
Note about drones: The two drones (C and F) in this work may be performed by a variety of possible instruments. The most ideal instrument (and the composer’s first preference) is a shruti box.
Other effective possibilities include harmonium, pipe organ (portatif or regular), synthesizer, or a cello. Dynamics are not notated in the drone part, since the possibilities will depend upon the instrument chosen. The drone should always be an accompaniment to the flugelhorn, however, and should never steal focus.
