The title London Bridge refers not to any actual historical or current physical bridge, nor to the famous nursery rhyme. Rather, it came from a recent visit to London, where my personal excitement came not from the admittedly wonderful city itself, but rather from the chance to see the various friends and colleagues who call it home. The “bridge” is thus an entirely figurative transatlantic one, and the straightforward and optimistic music of this piece is perhaps intended as a reminder of the joy of interconnection in these times when troubling nationalist isolationist tendencies are appearing on the international stage.
