The title of this piece refers to the process of decorative illumination as was practiced (primarily) in the Medieval era for the preparation of special manuscripts. This painstaking, labor-intensive, and highly detailed art produced work of remarkable complexity and was developed across the centuries of the Middle Ages into a brilliant specialization.
