Jubilee-Postlude on “Converse” (2001) is dedicated to Brenda Lynne Leach. It is a joyous setting of the familiar hymn tune CONVERSE (sometimes called ERIE) by Charles Converse, always paired with the text “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” The setting approaches the tune with a sense of free-wheeling glee. The work is in three general sections of similar mood. After an introduction, the tune is presented over a quickly pulsating ostinato pattern. A middle section, based on melodies “spun off” from the tune, ensues and leads back to a return of the original treatment, followed by a coda.
