Alive! (2002) was commissioned by Sandra Gay for the dedication of the new organ at Webster Presbyterian Church, Webster, New York. The work is dedicated to Webster Presbyterian Church on the occasion of the dedication of the new Schantz organ. A verse from I Corinthians (15:22) appears at the top of the score as an epigraph: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” A veiled and distant opening leads way to a lyrical aria. The aria reaches a climax which proceeds into an ecstatic dance. The ecstatic dance is interrupted by brief allusions to the opening and aria. Finally a vibrant coda brings the work to a close. The musical material for the work comes from the aria, which becomes transformed in the dance sections. The pitches of D and Eb play an important structural role throughout the work.
