Blue Glimmers (2002) for flute, clarinet and contrabass was written for and is dedicated to Aris Carastathis and the Lakehead University New Music Ensemble.

The work is inspired by the appearance and temperament of lakes—the Great Lakes of North America in particular. (Lakehead University is located on Lake Superior, the largest and purest of the Great Lakes.)

The first movement, Deep Invocation, is slow and rhapsodic. An interlocking melodic idea in the flute and clarinet is gradually revealed throughout. Contapuntal lines arrive at unisons, where timbres blend.

The second movement, Lake Dance, is joyful and vibrant. The musical language of this movement is indebted to aspects of modality and harmony from early American music.
