Slaughter of the Innocents (2025) was commissioned with the intention of its use as a musical score for dance in response to the poem Slaughter of the Innocents by poet Eugene Platt. (This is the title poem of the poet’s 2024 volume from Revival Press, Ireland.) Platt’s poem remembers the victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012.
The music moves from an intense beginning towards a section of remembrance for the 20 children. In this section, 20 timpani strokes are heard. Between each of these strokes, the brass unfold a broken-up, long chorale. A final section of benediction brings the music to a close.
