Fantasy-Variations on “Huntsville” (2001) was written for the Canticum Novum Music Festival. The work is dedicated to Emma Lou Diemer. The piece is based on the Diemer hymn tune HUNTSVILLE, set to the text “Christian Women, Christian Men” (Dorothy Diemer Hendry). It is a set of free variations on the hymn tune, beginning with a majestic opening followed by a brief excited section. This leads to a slow and hushed “quasi-passacaglia” followed by “aria-canon.” A toccata emerges and brings the piece to its conclusion after which the opening material returns.
